Semesta Bilingual Boarding School

Literacy Program at Semesta High School

The Literacy Program at Semesta School is a comprehensive initiative designed to cultivate a deep love for reading and writing, while enhancing students’ critical thinking and communication skills. It emphasizes not only traditional literacy but also digital and media literacy, preparing students to thrive in an information-rich world. The program integrates engaging activities that inspire creativity and reflection, with a strong focus on output that showcases students’ progress and achievements.

Aims of the Program

Promote a Lifelong Love of Reading and Writing

The program encourages students to appreciate literature and writing as essential tools for personal growth, creativity, and learning. It instills a passion for reading and the joy of expressing ideas through writing.

Enhance Language and Communication Skills

Students develop strong reading comprehension, writing fluency, and verbal communication skills, which are essential for academic success and everyday life.

Foster Critical Thinking and Analytical Skills

By engaging with a variety of texts and writing tasks, students learn to analyze, interpret, and critique information, fostering independent thought and informed perspectives.

Encourage Creativity and Self-expression

Writing fiction, poetry, and other creative forms gives students the opportunity to explore their imaginations and express themselves authentically.

Program Activities

Morning Reading Time

Each day begins with a designated reading period where students are encouraged to read a book of their choice. The books are selected by the school and divided into five genres: religious, science, history and nationalism, literature, and culture. This practice not only improves literacy but also helps set a focused and calm tone for the day.

English Book Readings

Throughout the school year, students participate in structured reading sessions where they explore a variety of English-language books, ranging from classic literature to contemporary works. Discussions and activities around these readings help students develop deeper insights and critical thinking.

Output of the Program

The ultimate output of the Literacy Program is a compilation of students’ works in the form of a published book. Throughout the year, students contribute their best writings—whether they are short stories, essays, poems, or reflections—and these works are collected, edited, and published in a school-wide anthology. This not only provides students with a tangible result of their hard work but also gives them a sense of pride and accomplishment as published authors.
